Abstract

In South Africa all children of divorce actions are the potential clients of the Office of the Family Advocate which thereby endeavours to ensure that all arrangements regarding the parents are in the best interests of minor children. It is important, therefore, that an investigation by this office should be viewed and experienced in a positive light by the children and should not exacerbate the trauma that possibly already accompanies the divorce. The present study researched the perception and experience of children who attended investigations at the Office of the Family Advocate. Interviews were conducted with 52 children who met the inclusion criteria and were selected by means of an availability sample. In addition to biographical data, information regarding aspects such as the standard of service, assessment techniques used, the nature of the investigations and possible points for improvement were obtained from the children. The results are given and discussed.
