Abstract

Abstract The article describes the work of a group for men carried out at the NSPCC ManChester Special Unit. The men were involved in child abuse and were frequently involved in court cases. The group structure and aims are described together with the prominent themes that aged. A tension between the aims of providing a forum of mutual helping and of acting as a source of Social control is noted. The importance of the press by which the men came to be seen by professional as disinterested in their child and hostile to intervention is highlighted. Similarly the real difficulties encountered when the men tackled personal issues are described.
