Abstract

It is like a chicken-or-egg conundrum as to whether the ordering of the lipids in the bilayers governs the observed cholesterol distribution or is it the distribution of cholesterol that results in the ordering of the lipids. To answer this question, we performed coarse-grained molecular simulations of several asymmetric lipid bilayers with and without cholesterol. It was found that in the presence of cholesterol, the ratio of the distribution of cholesterol in the inner and outer leaflets was close to the ratio of the chain order parameter (SChain) of the lipids in the inner and outer leaflets.
