Abstract
Mucins are high molecular weight glycoproteins. They are the major component of all mucus secreted from epithelial cells. As a visco-elastic layer they line the surfaces of various body cavities, including the respiratory, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. Depending on their site or origin, mucin monomers have molecular weights between 250 and 600 kDa, and are thus significantly larger than most other glycoproteins.
