Abstract

Abstract Four novel diterpenoids, spongiabutenolides A – D (2–5), all of which contain a γ-hydroxybutenolide moiety, have been isolated from a Philippines marine sponge of the genus Spongia. The structures of spongiabutenolides A – D (2–5) and the methyl esters 6 and 7 were elucidated by interpretation of spectral data. Spongiabuteonolide A (2) was synthesized from spongia-13(16),14-diene-19-oic acid (1) by singlet oxygen oxidation.
