Abstract

SYNOPSIS The spread of forest weeds, particularly bugweed and setaria grass, has become a serious problem in the eastern Transvaal. Several experiments were instituted to test the effectiveness of different herbicide treatments on those and their effect on tree growth. Recommendations listed below are those based on this research and are not official recommendations of the Directorate of Forestry. Bugweed is most easily and cheaply controlled by the application of a 0,30% active ingredient (a.i.) water solution of dicamba +2,4,5-T to the freshly cut stem surface. If a basal stem treatment of the standing plants is desired, a 3% (a.i.) solution of 2,4,5-T in Kogasin (a coal-based liquid carrier) is recommended if diesel is not to be used as a carrier. If diesel is used, a 3% (a.i.) solution of 2,4,5-T will give satisfactory results. All treatments should be done during the active growing season. The use of glyphosate (brand name Roundup) to kill setaria grass is well proved. The effect of such control on t...
