Abstract

Photoelectric spectrophotometry of emission lines in the 3700– 7400 Å range is presented for 12 regions of the Orion Nebula. The observations were obtained at CTIO with the 0.91- and 1.5-m telescopes and the Harvard scanner. Based on these observations the chemical composition is derived. The logarithmic abundances by number are H = 12.00, He = 11.00, C = 8.52, N = 7.76, 0 = 8.75, Ne = 7.90, S = 7.41, Cl = 5.15, Ar = 6.7. The presence of spatial temperature fluctuations has been taken into account and the helium lines have been corrected for resonance fluorescence produced by self-absorption from the 23S energy level. The abundances of C, N, O and Ne are very similar to the solar ones.
