Abstract

In controlled laboratory tests, using shallow glass chambers containing a coarse river sand substrate between ‘blank’ and ‘test’ sample cages, 3rd‐instar larvae of Costelytra zealandica (White) were attracted to parsnip and carrot root, freshly ground nutmeg, and s‐pinene (a constituent common to these materials). The terpenol a‐fenchol was strongly attractive to the larvae. Ryegrass root, α‐pinene, and limonene were not significantly attractive, and limonene may indeed have some repellent effect.
