Abstract

Stainless steel Type 316 is the alloy most favoured for use in both fast reactors and fusion reactor systems. Although the corrosion behaviour of 316 steel in sodium has been extensively studied much less is known about its performance in liquid lithium. This paper compares the interactions of the non-metals oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and silicon dissolved in the liquid metals lithium and sodium with the component metals in 316 steel. A particular difference between sodium and lithium is the ease with which the latter penetrates the grain boundaries of the steel, the influence of this penetration on carburization and nitridation rates will be discussed.
