Abstract

Professor Charles Marcel Poser passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 11, 2010, at age 87. He was born of American parents in Antwerp, Belgium, but grew up in New York. Poser obtained his bachelor's degree (Phi Beta Kappa) from the College of the City of New York in 1947 and his MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, in 1951, with the Zabriskie Prize in Neurology. After an internship at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, he became neurology resident and then chief resident in Dr. H. Houston Merritt's service at the Neurological Institute of Columbia–Presbyterian Medical Center. Poser was one of the 35 residents trained by Merritt who would become chairmen of neurology at academic institutions. He was faculty at the University of Kansas in Kansas City and at the University of Missouri in Kansas City.
