Abstract

The paper describes the principle of operation of surface- and buried-channel charge-coupled devices. Some of the current techniques used for fabricating two- and three-phase structures are described and factors which limit device performance are discussed. Some of the many applications for which c.c.d.s are being considered are described, examples being taken from the fields of digital memories, imaging, and analogue signal processing.
