Abstract

The first trials of the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) will probably aim at business users, for whom connectionless data services are a major concern. Thus, the statistical characterization of the data traffic produced by the interconnection of Local and Metropolitan Area Networks (LANs and MANs) through B-ISDN is of paramount importance for the design of the first B-ISDN services, and of the gateways between LANs and MANs on one side, and B-ISDN on the other. The characterization of the traffic produced by a LAN has already been tackled by several authors. In this paper we provide a first characterization of the traffic at the output of a MAN by using a simulation approach.
