Abstract

Novel compounds, U 2W 3Si 4, U 2Mo 3Ge 4 and U 2V 3Ge 4, have been synthesised by argon arc melting, using the correct elemental compositions. The crystal structures of U 2W 3Si 4 ( a = 6.847(5) A ̊ , b = 6.858(1) A ̊ , c = 6.767(9) A ̊ , β = 109.77(1)° ) and of U 2Mo 3Ge 4 ( a = 7.016(4) A ̊ , b = 6.995(2) A ̊ , c = 6.949 A ̊ , β = 110.21(2)° ) have been determined from single-crystal X-ray data. They have been shown to be isotypic with U 2Mo 3Si 4 ( a = 6.876(3) A ̊ , b = 6.883(1) A ̊ , c = 6.760(3) A ̊ , β = 109.79(2)°, space group P2 1/c, Z = 2 ). From X-ray powder intensity data, U 2V 3Ge 4 ( a = 6.986(1) A ̊ , b = 6.976(1) A ̊ , c = 6.927(1) A ̊ , β = 109.94(2)° ) was found to crystallize in the same structure type. U 2V 3Ge 4 is ferromagnetic below T C = 60 K whereas U 2W 3Si 4, U 2Mo 3Si 4 and U 2Mo 3Ge 4 do not show any ferromagnetic transition at low temperature.
