Abstract

A column Chromatographic technique has been developed for the fractionation of coal hydrogenation products, boiling above 250 °C, into asphaltenes, tar acids, tar bases, neutral nitrogen compounds and neutral oils. The method involves extraction of coal hydrogenation products by n-pentane and the extract is passed through successive columns specially developed for selective retention of tar acids, tar bases and neutral nitrogen compounds. Solvent is simultaneously distilled and recycled. The technique provides a convenient means of characterizing coal hydrogenation products within 10–12 h.
