Abstract
Purpose: A novel type of miniature electronic brachytherapy source allows delivery of intensity-modulated brachytherapy by varying not only dwell times and positions, but also dose rate and photon energy during the treatment. Since this type of source uses low-energy x-rays, dose distributions and spectral characteristics of the source may differ significantly from other types of brachytherapy sources. In addition, biological effects could be markedly different. We studied spectroscopic, dosimetric and microdosimetric characteristics of an electronic brachytherapy source.
