Abstract

This paper is concerned with how to display effectively 2D surface roughness, which was measured by using light sectioning method and by taking self-excited chatter marks as objective. The marks due to chatter which was mainly caused for work and tool respectively are taken. This aims to propose methods for analysis of 2D surface roughness and basis for better understanding of the chatter behaviour. Perspective view is shown adequate at first for visual and quantitative display. Equi-contour map which makes it possible to abstract ridges and valleys of the chatter marks is also effective description to observe trace of tool motion, characteristic pattern, and presence of the multiple regenerative effect. 2D Fourier analysis is applied to characterization of 3D surface texture. Correspondence of Fourier coefficient to surface texture is generally verified by inverse Fourier transform which helps to understand the correlation feasibly. 2D Fourier spectrum which is also depicted by perspective view well describes the wave forms observed on 2D surface roughness.
