Abstract

The residual lignin from samples of unbleached and bleached hardwood sulfate pulp was isolated by an aqueous acetic acid solution in the presence of zinc chloride. The resulting lignin was analyzed by 13C NMR and infrared Fourier spectroscopy, potentiometric titration, and cryoscopy. Physicochemical and spectral characteristics provide some insight into the structure of the residual lignin from sulfate pulp.
