Abstract

The solvent properties of mixtures of phenanthrene, naphthalene, fluorene, biphenyl, o-, m-, p-terphenyl and pyrene with benzene have been studied using solvatochromic indicators. Greatly enhanced solubilities of quaternary ammonium salts were observed for the phenanthrene–benzene system and the validity of the polarisability parameter, π*, to describe Gibbs energies of solution has been demonstrated.
