Abstract

This chapter examines the terminology designating people and families in Neo-Assyrian texts as well as the formulation of these texts, and the status of these people. It is divided into six main parts as follows: (1) slaves; (2) pledged persons; (3) persons and families enumerated in sales and lists of Land and People; (4) Royal Grants; (5) the (6) deportees and displaced persons. Pledges in Neo-Assyrian period are indicated in 125 documents: most show pledging of people as security for loans, and the rest attest to pledging of other items, mainly fields and houses. The Royal Grants group of seven documents is divided into two main sub-groups: grants and tax exemptions for officials; royal grants and personal decrees for temples.
