Abstract

The people of Israel are not only the specific audience to whom the discourse of Holiness code (H) is addressed-they also constitute as it were the domain where its objectives are to be realized. In all its different parts H contains a vision for the people, which decisively colours the notion of peoplehood. This vision is anchored in what YHWH has done for the Israelites in the past when he led them out of Egypt; it is realized in a durable relationship between YHWH and the people; and it entails consequences for the Israelites' conduct in all spheres of life. This chapter reviews these three main aspects. If the Exodus is the basis of the discourse in H, the relationship between YHWH and the Israelites is its centre. The god/people relationship instituted at the Exodus imposes certain demands on the people of Israel and on each Israelite individually. Keywords: Exodus; Holiness code (H); people of Israel; YHWH
