Abstract

Sustainability as part of coastal development is achieved at the intersection of the ecological, economic, and social spheres represented by the three components of sustainable development. Nowadays, erosion predominates in the coastal zones around the world; that is, there are losses of beaches and cliffs. The only coasts that show sand accumulation are those in which there are large rivers with an abundant sediment load. In Playa Las Glorias, the municipality of Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico, an erosion of more than 35myear−1 has been measured, due to the impoundment of most of the sediment input. They have lost up to 300m perpendicular to the coast along 4.5km, disappearing almost half the town. To recovered the lost terrain we proposed the use of geotubes, constructing a barrier parallel to the beach and filling with dredging and reinforcing these structures with submerged breakwaters of geotubes.
