Abstract

This chapter presents various applications of ultrafine-grained (UFG) and nanograined (NG) metals processed by different severe plastic deformation (SPD) methods. UFG and NG materials s exist in virtually all product sectors where superior mechanical properties such as strength-to-weight ratio, strength, and fatigue life are critical design parameters. More than 100 specific markets for NG metals in transportation, aerospace, medical devices, sports products, chemical processing, defense, and electronics have been introduced through formal market analyses conducted by companies such as Metallicum. The innovation probability as a function of the specific strength of the material is schematically depicted in Fig. 9.1. This figure indicates that the UFG materials will probably meet their primary applications in extreme environmental conditions where the required properties are unusually drastic. For example, aeronautical systems, biomedical applications, for innovative developments in the energy, oil and gas sectors, microelectromechanical systems, and high-performance sports applications. Here we collect some of the applied markets for UFG and NG metals.
