Abstract
This chapter discusses the legal aspects of marine mineral exploration and surveys the international legal framework within which such exploration must be conducted. The regime of the areas within national jurisdiction, landward of the outer limit of the continental shelf, is discussed. The chapter focuses on the legal regime of marine mineral exploration in the “Area beyond the limits of national jurisdiction.” The rules of international law governing the exploration of marine minerals in the area within the limits of national jurisdiction are discussed. The areas within national jurisdiction include all maritime zones lying landward of the outer limit of the legal continental shelf. The chapter provides an account of the principal features of the UN regime (that is still under development), and the unilateral legislation of a number of the leading industrialized states.
