Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) was established as a United Nations (UN) agency in 1948 to coordinate international health issues. It incorporated several predecessor organizations. As the UN is not a world government, also the WHO has neither the mandate nor the means to lead the world on health issues, nor is it the highest scientific authority. The key WHO officers are sent by their governments, which are often neither democratically legitimized nor allow freedom of expression. The WHO has important roles, but the free world’s science and politics must better distinguish between the WHO’s self-image & claim to leadership and reality. Politically correct declamations in the COVID-19 pandemic sound nice but do not tackle its true challenges. Science is not defined by the wish of majorities. So far, leadership in the COVID-19 pandemic was regrettably poor worldwide. Believing in false prophets will not improve anything.
