Abstract

Detection and extraction from fermentation medium is an integral part of terpenoid production from microbial sources. As their structural and functional diversity, the solubility of terpenoids is also versatile and most of them are soluble in a wide range of organic solvents such as methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate, hexane, etc. However, due to the presence of different functional groups, their solubility varies in these solvent. Several terpenoids, such as isoprene, isopentenol, pinene, limonene, are volatile in nature; therefore, their recovery from fermentation medium is challenging. The extraction of nonvolatile terpenoids is generally carried out using liquid-liquid extraction, where terpenoids partitioned themselves in different solvents as per their stoichiometry. Thus a wise selection of solvent is an important step to maximize the product recovery. Here, we have summarized different extraction techniques for the extraction of terpenoid from the fermentation medium. The approaches for the maximum product recovery have also been discussed.
