Abstract

Adrenal insufficiency (AI) involves insufficient endogenous production of steroid hormones. Acute and chronic AI presentations include anorexia, fatigue, and orthostatic hypotension. Acute AI is considered a medical emergency to be managed with volume resuscitation, steroid supplementation, and vasopressors. Perioperative steroid supplementation may be necessary for patients with chronic AI.
