Abstract

Summary The emotional impact of illness and hospitalizalion on children can elicit overwhelmingly traumatic and fear-producing stresses. The child's usual ways of coping may not reduce these stresses. Humor which involves aspects of the child's understanding of illness and hospitalization can reduce stress to a manageable level. Humor integrated with play is advocated to enable the child to understand the intentions of humor in a less threatening manner. The particular age of the child to include the child's ways of thinking and expressing self are considerations in planning for the use of humor. Changes in behavior of children with whom humor has been introduced resulted in decreased fears related to the strangeness of the environment inside and outside the body.
