Abstract

This chapter discusses the social, legal, and economic issues related to solar energy. The two aspects in the economic assessment of solar systems, the financial and the proportion of the total energy demand which can be met by solar energy, are integrated in any complete assessment. The chapter also discusses a separate analysis of various alternative approaches. Any solar heating system for domestic hot water, space heating or industrial applications, will save energy. Interest rates and inflation rates will not remain constant for long periods. The performance of a solar collector may deteriorate and the system may need maintenance. All these factors can be assessed by an extension of the step-by-step procedure. Conventional discounted cash flow concepts are used to establish the present value of future savings and can be used to determine whether it is economically justifiable to invest in a solar heating system based on the anticipated savings in heating costs over the lifetime of the system.
