Abstract

Chapter 7—Airport Maintenance Standards & Air Traffic Control & Air Operations investigates the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 139 as related to maintaining runway and taxiway pavements, airfield signage, markings and lighting, navigational aids, and safety areas, as well as monitoring airfield driving and construction activities in the air operations area (AOA). Methods for constructing airport runways and taxiways of flexible (asphalt, grass, dirt, gravel) or rigid (concrete) materials are also explored. Airport pavement is exposed to weathering through alternate freezing and thawing along with other elements of weather and usage. Runway Safety Areas (RSA) and Taxiway Safety Areas surrounding runways and taxiways providing a margin of safety for aircraft overruns also must be inspected and maintained. Airfield signs, markings, and lighting (SML) provide critical location information to pilots and must be maintained, ensuring their visibility during day and night conditions. Airport infrastructure required to be maintained for supporting various flight operations is described. Special topics addressing future technological concerns, such as NextGen and Blended Airspace, are also presented as challenges that will soon require greater support from Airport Operations personnel.
