Abstract

When looking to secure our data, we should investigate whether data classification is appropriate to our environment. Data classification can provide a foundation on which to base other portions of our security program, such as access control programs, physical and environmental security, and zones of trust and control. We can also look to ensuring data confidentiality through the use of well-tested technologies, such as encryption algorithms. Making use of tested technologies and avoiding the urge to “roll your own” security can often provide a much stronger basis for security controls.
