Abstract
This chapter discusses the composition and capabilities of Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS). GMPLS extends the reach of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) via the control networks and provides greater flexibility and centralized control and management of rigid optical networks. GMPLS discovers its neighbors, distributes link information, provides topology management, and provides path management, link protection, and recovery. In performing these functions, GMPLS can help in achieving the pinnacle of networking. GMPLS allows for centralized control, automatic provisioning, load balancing, provisioned bandwidth service, bandwidth on demand, and the presence of an optical virtual private network (OVPN). A label could map to a color in a spectrum and MPLS packets could be linked directly to an optical network; this process is called “MPLambdaS” (MPλS). To have a truly dynamic network, we required a method for complete control of a network within the optical core was required. Thus, the concept of intelligent optical networking was born.
