Abstract

This chapter focuses on the actions available in the Extensible Markup Language (XML) tag library. Many of these actions are similar to those provided in the Core tag library, but with one major difference. The XML actions allow for the use of XPath as the expression language. XPath is a common way to define access to an XML document structure. In addition, the core and conditional XML actions are also transformation actions. These allow for XML documents to be transformed using Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT). The XML actions play an important role in today's Web applications. As XML is omnipresent, dealing with XML documents becomes much easier with the actions provided in the XML tag library. It is possible to do all sorts of data comparison, iteration, and transformations using XSLT along with the XML actions. All these actions make page authoring an easy task. In order to make the best use of the XML actions, it is important to have a firm understanding of at least XPath and XSL.
