Abstract

The people living next to the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea were among the last in Europe to be converted to Christianity in the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries. The Baltic States by settling practically all maritime boundaries, except some areas south of Bornholm Island, have created very favorable conditions for solving other important problems that challenge people living around the Baltic. The European Union has become the most important actor in the Baltic Sea region in the recent years because its member-States are dominant in the area. The European Union has been developing its new approach to the Baltic Sea region and Northern Europe as a whole under the Northern Dimension Initiative. The States in the area are confronted with a great challenge to eliminate this threat to population and biological life in the Baltic Sea region. Keywords:Baltic Sea; Baltic States; Bornholm Island; maritime boundary
