Abstract

Polyvinylidene fluoride, ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene, and polyvinyl fluoride were all invented at the DuPont Company (now Chemours Co.) in the early 1940s. Some of those polymers had disadvantages over the others. Availability of monomer preparation technology was an important consideration. The required capital expenditures and technology investments for successful commercialization were important considerations.
