Abstract

This chapter considers asset management systems for transportation, including asset life, maintenance regimes, performance measures and performance assessment. It continues the discussion of climate and environmental influences and impacts on transportation assets and operations (including failure type and potential limits on operations). This includes consideration of weather-related impacts on transport operations, including airports. Management of risk and uncertainty continues as a major focus in adaptation planning for transportation when considering evaluation methods to be employed. The main method for such evaluation in transportation has been benefit–cost analysis, although as discussed previously alternative methods are also available. These methods require some revision and extension for decision-making under uncertainty, especially for climate change impacts, and the later part of this chapter is devoted to these.
