Abstract

This textbook concludes with a brief section that looks ahead to a more sustainable future. The case studies in the book have laid out a series of sometimes daunting environmental challenges. This section offers some innovative approaches that help meet the global need for resources while minimizing our impact on the biosphere. Topics covered include agricultural stability, alternative energy sources, transportation, green buildings, wastewater treatment, efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions, and attempts to reverse the effects of deforestation and desertification. Students will have the opportunity to explore new approaches to help solve complex environmental problems, culminating in a student-designed community that features a goal of a zero environmental footprint by 2025. Students will be required to do calculations and provide justifications to support their community design choices.
