Abstract

This chapter dealt with the functional biology of potato-virus interactions. In the beginning of the chapter an overview of important potato viruses and their strains and genome organization are given. Then under defense mechanism and resistance genes, the genes responsible for hypersensitive response and extreme resistance, and their location on potato genome and classification of potato virus strains based on resistance reaction are discussed. Interaction of translation initiation factor, eIF4E with viral proteins, transcriptome and proteome analysis of gene expression changes during potato-virus interactions, role of heat shock proteins, salicylic acid, hormones and vsiRNAs in potato-virus interactions are then explained. At the end of the chapter, cytopathological changes in cell organelles of potato due to virus infection and antagonistic and synergistic interaction between potato viruses have been described in detail.
