Abstract

IT has revolutionized all spheres of human life, and food safety is no exception. While, in developing countries, IT is used in basic management systems to which food safety is an incidental beneficiary. In the developed countries, however, there are inherent IT systems in use, meant exclusively for food safety. With newer trends of IT (e.g., cloud computing) and availability of cheaper hardware with higher specification (e.g., hand held devices), IT has become extremely efficient and user-friendly. Its being used for supply chain management, HACCP processes, advanced and faster laboratory tests, food-borne disease outbreak prevention/control and research in food safety. Developing countries too, would imbibe the same as the benefits accrued from this technology cannot be ignored. There are certain risks too with increasing use of IT, such as cyber-frauds and cyber-attacks, for which prudent cyber-security mechanisms have to be in place. In the years to come, the potential of IT in food-safety is tremendous.
