Abstract

Media and information literacy (MIL) is a complex set of skills that are needed through the whole learning process, competencies that are fundamental in all education. Research shows that young people need to strengthen these competencies. Projects in the Norwegian School Library Program 2009–13 aimed at using the library as a tool in MIL instruction. Reports from the projects demonstrated the need to anchor the library in plans and management in school, and stressed that collaboration between teachers and librarians is crucial in order to integrate the library into pedagogical work. Similar experiences are documented in research projects elsewhere. The findings indicate that scholars and academic librarians instructing teacher education students and library students should include the use of school libraries in the curriculum so that the students are not only media- and information-literate themselves but also able to use the library as a resource when starting their own teaching and library practice.
