Abstract

In view of the finite availability of the conventional energy sources and the associated adverse environmental impacts of their usage, the shift to renewable sources is inevitable. In addition to awareness generation, a step-up in research and development efforts to bring down the cost per unit of energy from most of the renewable energy sources is required. Himachal Pradesh, an Indian State located in the northwest part of the country in the lap of the Himalayas, has an ideal environment for harnessing the flowing water and solar energy. This chapter outlines the initiatives taken by Himachal Pradesh (HP) in popularizing the use of renewable energy sources with a special emphasis on the development of small hydropower, installation of hydrodams, and propagation of passive solar housing technology. Among the various hydro-mechanical devices, hydraulic rams (hydrams) have been identified by the HP Government for propagation, keeping in view their capability to bring about socio-economic development in the rural areas of the State by providing cost-effective alternative to the conventional modes of minor irrigation.
