Abstract

Since the 1920s the main contribution to greenhouse gas emissions has come from the combustion of fossil fuels. Total emissions in 2013 were 35.3Gt of carbon dioxide. In 2010 the emissions of carbon dioxide for electricity and heat production accounted for roughly 38% of all carbon dioxide emissions. The main source is coal combustion, followed by natural gas. Power generation is the main contributor to these emissions. Reducing the level of emissions to control global warming will therefore have a big impact on the power sector. The international effort to limit global warming is being led by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change with advice from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Methods to control emissions include cap-and-trade schemes and carbon taxes.
