Abstract
This chapter deals with the important applications of switchable solvents in advancements of technological and analytical systems aligned with green chemical industrial processes. The general aspects of switchable (water, hydrophilicity, and polarity) solvents and their applications in chemical production and separation processes have been addressed. In contrast to other triggers (oxidants, voltage, light, acids, etc.), CO2 has been the most acceptable trigger probably due to its nonpoisonous nature, high solubility in water, and easy elimination from the system in order to reverse the process. The analytical applications of switchable hydrophilicity solvents in determination of inorganic as well as organic compounds at trace level in various matrices using chromatographic, spectroscopic, and electro-analytical methods have been presented in tabular form.
