Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter presents the electric field as an alternative to the concept of force acting through empty space. Electric field is the empty space between electric charges to be filled with little arrows or vectors. Electric field is the mechanism for explaining the Coulomb force. This chapter discusses the concept of an electric field in terms of Faraday's electric field lines. Although not necessary, these electric field lines are extremely helpful in visualizing, correlating, and understanding a wide range of electrical phenomena. Gauss' law, which relates electric fields to charges, is developed in terms of the electric field lines. The chapter illustrates the application of Gauss' law to a variety of physical situations. The action of an electric field on individual charges supplies evidence that electric charge is quantized and leads to a measurement of the fundamental discrete amount of charge.
