Abstract

The gamma rhythm is involved in perceptual binding attention, reaction times, and initiation of movements. There are two major types, one is broadband and high frequency and is excitatory, whereas other is narrow band with lower frequency and is inhibitory. The beta rhythm is dominant in the motor system and occurs in the auditory and visual systems; it is suppressed by movement and sound and allows prediction of sensory and motor planning. The theta rhythm underlies memory processes in hippocampus and cortex, and is important in chunking of speech. Theta synchronizes phase-locked alpha and beta and activity across distributed cortical areas.
