Abstract
This chapter discusses sexual deviance among adults and the role of forensic psychology in relation to this deviant behavior. Psychology meets the legal system around the issue of sexual deviance at several points following the alleged commission of a sexual crime. Responsibility, dangerousness, and appropriateness for treatment are the major issues psychology is asked to address throughout the legal process. It is ordinarily the presence of a major mental disorder that may have produced sexually deviant behaviors that is in question. Psychoanalysts maintain that sexual deviance is the result of unresolved conflicts in psychosexual development and a regression to earlier developmental levels in an attempt to reenact individuation from the mother and resolve castration anxiety. Mental health professionals in forensic settings are often required to assess risk of reoffending for their patients.
