Abstract

Asphaltene aggregation and deposition represent a complex and challenging problem. Asphaltenes deposit due to many thermodynamic and hydrodynamic factors. Early detection and management of the problem is the main goal for smooth production operations. Asphaltene management can be achieved by means of operational, chemical, and nonchemical management methods. Operational methods are based on optimizing process parameters to operate in an asphaltene-free zone, the chemical methods use specialty chemicals that interfere with the asphaltene aggregation and deposition, while the nonchemical methods use physical means to control asphaltene aggregation. In this chapter the different asphaltene prevention and removal methods are discussed in detail to furnish the necessary knowledge to combat the problem. Furthermore, step-by-step field applications of asphaltene management strategies are provided to collectively guide operators in their practical efforts to fight asphaltenes. Additionally, field case studies are given as examples of successful application of these strategies.
