Abstract

Inappropriate landfilling can negatively affect the environment and human health; thus, the selection of suitable landfill sites is essential in the solid waste management process. This study presents a GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis approach for site selection and environmental impact assessment of landfill sites in Kermanshah City, Iran. First, criteria affecting the location of municipal landfills were selected based on a literature review, national regulations, and the availability of the data. The data were obtained and/or extracted from topographical and geological maps, satellite images, field surveys, and available data from some organizations. The maps were prepared in ArcGIS 10.5, and classified into four classes, from unsuitable to highly suitable. Subsequently, the weights of the factors were identified, and all maps were aggregated to obtain the landfill suitability map. Finally, an environmental impact assessment was developed to identify the impacts and propose appropriate mitigation strategies. The results showed that approximately 7% of the study area falls under highly suitable conditions, whereas nearly 90% are unsuitable for landfill sites. In conclusion, the analysis of landfill site selection could be conducted effectively by integrating the GIS and multi-criteria analysis approach.
