Abstract
Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs are the ongoing process of facilitating the knowledge and skills required for diabetes self-care, including the support needed to sustain the self-care behaviors and to provide the foundation to assist persons with diabetes (PWD) in navigating through this complex process. Traditional DSMES programs were delivered mostly in clinical facilities as formal programs, which limited their generalizability to a larger population of PWD. As a remedy for this issue, incorporating digital technologies to assist the delivery of DSMES programs and support diabetes self-care becomes a promising approach to combat the diabetes epidemic. Diabetes technologies, such as hardware, devices, and software that are used by PWD to manage blood glucose levels have proven their effectiveness in improving the health of PWD. A recent metaanalysis revealed that diabetes interventions that involved any type of digital components can lead to a significant 0.64% reduction in hemoglobin A1c (Kebede et al., 2018). Nonetheless, few clinicians have systematically examined how to integrate digital diabetes technology into ongoing DSMES programs.
