Abstract

The attractive concept and benefits of the membrane reactors lead to their application in environmental remediations in addition to different materials transformation and production. In this chapter the environmental applications of membrane reactors are categorized as two main groups: wastewater treatment applications and waste gas treatment applications. Different configurations of the used membrane reactors in these fields as well as their working principle and advantages were reviewed. Membrane bioreactors and photocatalytic membrane reactors are the major membrane reactors which used in the transformation of the wastewater pollutants. Electrochemical membrane reactors as environment-friendly technique were proposed for NOx and SOx removal from polluted gas and their transformation into nitrogen and added-value products, whereas contactor type membrane reactors and membrane bioreactors were applied for volatile organic compound treatments of the polluted gas streams.
