Abstract

Physalis peruviana L. belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). It is a valuable crop due to its exotic nature and export potential, and as a result, it is highly sought after for breeding and cultivation programs in many countries. This plant primarily grows in Chile, Colombia, and Peru, and its fruits are locally called aguaymanto, uvilla, or uchuva, but internationally cape gooseberry, goldenberry, or Peruvian groundcherry. Previous reports highlight the bioactive properties of the leaf-derived extract from P. peruviana. The occurrence of various active compounds in leaves has been associated with several biological activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, insecticide, antidiabetic, antiinflammatory, and anticancer effects, making them valuable functional ingredients for various applications. Hence, this chapter has gathered available evidence-based information on the P. peruviana leaf-derived phytochemistry and biological properties, aimed at creating a reference compilation that can be employed for future research on this P. peruviana plant part.
